Coverage

Argentina

Project time

May 2007- June 2008

Objectives/scope

Support national bioenergy strategy formulation

Institutional settings

FAO TCP/ARG/3101. Technical counterpart in the analysis was the Unit of Clima y Agua of the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA). Overall, WISDOM Argentina has been fruit of the collaboration among the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Alimentos (SAGPyA), the Secretaría de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable (SAyDS), the Secreteria de Energia (SE) and the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INDEC).

Scale/resolution

Raster cell resolution = 250 m
Administrative = Departamento (531 units within 24 Provinces)

Demand features

Residential sector: estimation and mapping based on census data on cooking fuels and other generic assumptions.
Commercial sector: Restaurants (mainly “asadores”) and bakeries.
Industrial sector: Brick making and drying of yerba mate and tea
Public sector: not relevant
Values are provisional, further investigation is required.

Supply features

Due to lack of a national land use or land cover map, the analysis required the merging of 10 map layers hierarchically superimposed.
Direct sources
Woody biomass: Forest Plantations harvesting by-products; natural forest sustainable, accessible and available production; agricultural plantations (pruning of olive trees, vineyards, fruit trees). Other biomass: harvesting residues of sugar cane, rice
Indirect sources
Plantations and natural forest sawmills by-products; Industrial by-products of cotton; rice mills, peanut industry, sugar cane, olive oil.

Integration features

Supply/demand balance: pixel-level, local context balance within a 10-km radius; “commercial” balance based on “commercial” supply potential; administrative-level balance.

Woodshed/bio-shed analysis

Based on commercial balance surplus, an example of bio-shed analysis was carried out for the city of Cordoba considering minimum, medium and maximum productivity levels.

Integration with other aspects

Not implemented

Findings/conclusions

Upgraded policy relevance of wood and non-woody biomass for energy. First holistic vision and evaluation of biomass for energy in the Argentina Energy Matrix, providing evidence of its great potential.
Definition of critical data gaps and weaknesses for further investigations.
Necessity to undertake Province-level high resolution analyses.
